The Governor's Club in Magnolia Springs, Baldwin County is a notable example of an early twentieth century resort hotel and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000. The hotel was originally constructed around 1908 as part of numerous buildings on the estate of Chicago businessman Frank Brunell. In 1923, Brunell sold several acres of their property, including the property on which this structure sat, to local businessman Walter Richardson, who donated it to a local civic organization called the Governor's Club to serve as a resort. It served that purpose until the mid-1930s, when it became a private residence. It remains so today.

HISTORY

Just behind a white picket fence, deep in the heart of sleepy Magnolia Springs, lies a much-loved family compound that sprawls beside the meandering Magnolia River.

The Houser estate was acquired in 1987 and, throughout the 1990s, was restored and expanded, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Sitting on about two acres of lushly landscaped property, the original, circa-1900 home, once known as the Governor's Club, has been completely restored.

When Frank Brunell, a wealthy Chicago businessman, originally purchased the land alongside the river more than a hundred years ago, he built the home, along with some other cottages, a water tower and a working farm. According to the application for the National Register, the home has historical significance because it's a rare example of an early 20th Century resort hotel - a place where Northerners could escape the harsh winters.

Following a scandal during prohibition involving Governor William Brandon and Judge Frank Lenior concerning the finding of liquor in a shack down river where the governor and friends were playing cards, the property was sold and passed through several owners including a period in 1931 when a Miss Mary D. Ware and Miss Eleanor Stories of Birmingham opened the club and catered to weekend parties.

The Charles Carpenters of Chicago purchased the property in the mild 1930’s and in the 1950’s it was sold to Dr. L.E. Mornton of Anniston. The property has remained in the family since.
